Home About The Book Successful Therapy Contact

I am a clinical psychologist with 25 years of experience doing psychotherapy and 20 years of experience supervising other therapists. I have been licensed as a psychologist in the state of Wisconsin since 1982 (License #991) and have practiced in Appleton, Wisconsin for 20 years. I am a member of both the American Psychological Association and the Wisconsin Psychological Association.

I have focused my career on understanding what is genuinely curative about psychotherapy: what enables individuals to make meaningful and lasting changes in their lives.

In my undergraduate years at Princeton University (A.B., 1971) I studied European intellectual history and Asian religions to try to understand the various ways that people think about their lives. In 1975, I entered the clinical psychology program at St. Louis University and obtained my Ph.D. from that institution in 1981.

From 1982 until 1986, I held a teaching position with the Department of Family Medicine of the University of Wisconsin, helping to train family practice doctors in the psychological aspects of medicine. Since 1986, I have been in independent practice.

Over the past 25 years, I have worked with thousands of clients with a wide variety of problems: depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, marriage and divorce problems, and emotional problems in children. It has been my goal to figure out what type of therapeutic relationship and techniques are truly helpful to each of my clients. It has been a challenge which has been greatly rewarding to me and, I trust, to most of my clients!

On the personal side of my life, I am the proud father and step-father to six grown children and I am the grateful husband of my wonderful wife, Terri. I enjoy gardening, bike riding, snow shoeing, kayaking, and reading novels about people with problems (I don't get enough, I guess!). I have played the guitar and basketball since I was a child but my rock star and NBA aspirations died long ago.

"Following a stressful and unhappy retirement complicated by family problems and issues of aging, I was plunged into an abyss of depression from which I could not climb, however hard I tried. Just five months of talking with Dr. Burkham gave me insights into my own personality and helped me understand and deal with the issues that seemed so impossible before. I am now energized to take up my new life and look forward to whatever that brings."
